Stingless Bee Honey — Global Lessons, Local Futures
Stingless bee honey is undergoing a transformation. Across the world, researchers, producers, and industry leaders are converging on a shared goal: to understand, protect, and elevate one of the most unique bee products on the planet. Fresh from presenting at the International Symposium on Stingless Bees (ISSB) in Naga City, Philippines, Dean Haley brings home a firsthand account of how rapidly the field is evolving — and what Australia stands to gain.
This talk explores the emerging global movement toward honey quality assurance, including ISO methodologies, regional standards, and the growing push for an international CODEX standard to support fair trade, consumer confidence, and scientific consistency. Drawing on experiences from the Philippines and Malaysia — two regions at the forefront of innovation — Dean highlights integrated farm models that combine stingless beekeeping with tourism, education, and sanitary production systems. These enterprises demonstrate how high‑quality honey and value‑added products can be produced at scale while maintaining ecological and cultural integrity.
Attendees will gain insight into:
· Global quality frameworks shaping the future of stingless bee honey
· Innovative production systems from the Philippines and Malaysia
· Opportunities for Australian producers to strengthen local industry growth
The role of research and collaboration in building a sustainable global market
With over 250 participants, ISSB showcased a vibrant, international community committed to advancing meliponiculture. Dean’s talk distils the most important lessons, challenges, and opportunities — offering a clear vision of where stingless bee honey is heading and how Australia can position itself within this global shift.
Dean presented this talk in September 2025, but technical issues meant that the broadcast was interrupted. Please join Dean Haley again, for an enthusiastic talk.
